Protesters in the breakaway Georgia region of Abkhazia have stormed parliament and the presidential complex after the government planned to approve a controversial pro-Russia bill.

Protesters stormed the parliament of the Russian-backed breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia on Friday and opposition politicians demanded the resignation of the self-styled president over an unpopular investment agreement with Moscow.

Protests against a controversial investment agreement with Russia escalated into clashes in Sukhum, the capital of Russian-occupied Abkhazia. The proposed law seeks to permit Russians to purchase property in Abkhazia.

Protesters opposing a measure allowing Russians to buy property in the Georgian territory of Abkhazia stormed the separatist republic’s parliament building and presidential office and clashed with police.

Abkhazia is a separatist region internationally recognised as part of Georgia, but seen as independent by Russia and its allies. It broke away from Georgia and tilted towards Russian rule following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

Protests erupted in the Russian-occupied Georgian province of Abkhazia on Friday, November 15. The protesters took to the streets to oppose the investment agreement with Russia, Echo of the Caucasus reports.
